Unit-14 radio and audience profile


BBC Radio 4

The station that I am doing is BBC radio 4. BBC radio 4 has been on air over 40 years. Most programmes are available for 4 weeks after broadcast as streaming audio from Radio 4’s listen again page. It is owned and operated by the British broadcasting corporation that broadcasts a wide variety of spoken-word programmes including news, drama, comedy, science and history. BBC radio 4 is also available through Freeview, sky, Virgin media and on the internet. BBC radio 4 are funded by TV license.


49% males listen to BBC radio 4 and 51% females listen to BBC radio 4. The average age of the radio 4 listeners is 56 years and they target an older audience. The station also has an upmarket bias. 75% of those fall into the ABC1 demographics. 11.5 million Adults listen to radio 4 each week. 21.2% of the population. Radio 4 attracts 1.8 million unique browsers to its site each week. Radio 4’s drama attracts 6.96 million average listener’s a week, and comedy reaches 5.52 million. The audience mainly listens to radio 4 from Monday to Friday as shown on the graph below. The nationality of BBC radio 4 is mainly British white as the presenters are white for example john Humphrey’s, Edward Stourton and many more.

 Radio 4 has show’s straight after another for example each show is half an hour long or 15 minutes long .they have morning, afternoon, evening and late shows. The early shows are mainly for the people that like to watch their shows live and early and the late shows are for those people who work and get back very late. All the episodes are repeated so that people can watch it later or catch up with it. The table below shows the time schedule for today’s shows that are going on air. This appeals to the target audience because more elderly people are attracted to the radio 4 shows than other age groups.
